About Visual Field Perimeters

Visual field perimeters, also known as visual field analyzers, are used to detect blind spots (scotomas) or other defects in central and peripheral vision.  These tests allow optometrists and ophthalmologists to measure the full horizontal and vertical range and sensitivity of vision.  During a visual field examination, also known as a Humphrey visual field test, a series of various light stimuli are presented, and the patient responds when they see the light, thus mapping their field of vision.  In addition to diagnosis, visual field tests can be tracked over time to measure disease progression, most commonly for glaucoma.
