About Optical Coherence Tomography

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a highly sensitive ophthalmic test that uses light waves to take a cross-sectional image of the retina and anterior segment.  I can take both two and three-dimensional images with micrometer resolution.  This allows practitioners to view the layers of the retina and measure their thickness.  The information obtained from the OCT test is then used in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic macular edema.  With use of OCT imaging, eye care physicians can detect disease early, often before physical symptoms occur.
